After a long time being on the EEG, all the glue was stuck in his long hair, and the patient was itching at his scalp. Tiana noticed and took the time to give him the full salon experience with a deep hair wash and full nail cleaning!
Tiana goes above and beyond to make her patients feel special, but she has cared for one of our long-term PICU.CICU patients whom I would like to nominate for the DAISY Award. This patient has not frequently had family visitors due to work and home constraints, as they do not live nearby. With his admission, he experienced a significant medical event that decreased his ability to do things independently and speak as he did before. She decorated his room with all the things he loves and enjoys, and even painted the patient's sliding door to make him feel more comfortable and more kid-friendly in the PICU.CICU, which can be a scary place for a 10-year-old.
Early in his care, he was intubated and deeply sedated. Tiana ensured that each day he received a good bath, all his pressure points were covered with new Mepilex dressings, and that he got some stretching exercises to prevent contractures. When he was having a very difficult time communicating, Tiana never rushed him and sat at his bedside to listen to what he had to say and ask him questions so that he could feel empowered. She advocated for the patient when he was reporting continued pain, and acetaminophen/ibuprofen were able to subdue the pain.
After a long time being on the EEG, all the glue was stuck in his long hair, and the patient was itching at his scalp. Tiana noticed and took the time to give him the full salon experience with a deep hair wash and full nail cleaning! Once the patient was well enough to go for rides in the wheelchair, Tiana took him on frequent walks around the unit and allowed him to socialize with the other nurses and technicians on the unit to promote his social interactions. She even pulled our education whiteboard out to have him show off his artistic skills to everyone! He even drew a picture of a rainbow, wrote her name on it, and gave it to her!
One morning, the patient was missing being outside in the sun, an activity he said he wished to do as soon as he got home. Tiana advocated for the patient to have an order that medically cleared him to be taken outside on the monitor with the RN whenever he wanted. When the family has visited, Tiana has made them feel so welcome as well. She brought them markers to draw pictures of their brother that he could keep in his room to remind him of his family, and then she hung them in the patient's room where he would be able to see them. With the patient's family, she maintains a respectful and informative relationship, communicating the progress their son has made and the care plan that has been implemented.
Each time Tiana has come into work, even when she is not assigned this patient, I have seen her saying hi and checking in on him throughout the day. You can tell by his reaction that he looks forward to seeing her and has a great deal of trust in her. This patient is near and dear to all our hearts, but Tiana has consistently shown how much she cares for her patients throughout every stage in the PICU.CICU kid's journey that I, as well as other nurses and doctors on the unit, have witnessed, she deserves this kind of recognition for her big heart and dedication in providing high-quality, patient- and family-centered care.
