Recently, Theresa Savino was the House Supervisor on the day shift. She was performing her normal rounding when near the dining room, an elderly man approached her. She noted that he was deaf and using sign language to communicate with her. He appeared to be indicating that there was a car accident. Theresa was able to quickly locate a staff member who was fairly proficient in sign language. It was determined that this man's wife had been in a car accident. He was trying to locate her and find out her status. Theresa called all of the area ERs until she located the man's wife. The man's wife had been admitted to a nearby facility. Theresa was able to give the husband an update as to where his wife was located so the husband could be with her.
This is an excellent example of going above and beyond to provide the highest quality of nursing care possible and to assist those in need. Theresa's diligence to her daily routine, with compassion and understanding, and her attention to the needs of a visitor provided the care that we proclaim as our Mission. This man was provided with the appropriate information to alleviate his fears and anxiety and to be with his wife. He greatly appreciated her assistance.
Theresa has been recognized many times in our Daily Safety Huddle. The recognition she receives is in regards to managing difficult situations and patient throughput. Theresa always has the patient at the center of her decision making. She recognizes how a patient and their family are impacted by decisions being made. She recognizes when it is appropriate to include the administrator on call. Theresa works to problem solve every avenue before discussing hospital diversion as she understands the impact this has on our community. She will discuss with providers her concerns or provide recognition as appropriate. Through this, Theresa demonstrates collaboration and teamwork.
A Cath Lab / IR nurse needed to go on medical leave suddenly. Theresa stepped in immediately and cross-trained to Interventional Radiology. Theresa also assists in covering call shifts. I admire this attribute in Theresa. Her willingness to learn and provide excellent patient care, even when not in her normal routine of work. This demonstrates her love of nursing across all spectrums of care.
