I want to take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary compassion and dedication shown by Laci, Sara, and Michelle—three nurses whose actions went far beyond clinical care. What I witnessed and heard, and experienced firsthand the next day, wasn’t just exceptional nursing—it was humanity at its most beautiful.
A patient was admitted to the MICU overnight, and from the beginning, it was clear he was nearing the end of his life. Despite his condition, he remained joyful, faith-filled, and deeply grateful. He spoke lovingly of his family and shared his concern for his wife—worried about leaving her behind—but found comfort in believing she would be okay in time.
Later that evening, he quietly asked Laci and Sara to be honest with him. He wanted to know if they thought he had much time left. They gently shared their concerns and sat with him, listening to his life stories. He told them they were his angels and then went on to share a sweet moment which stood out—he smiled and said he hadn’t had a drink in over ten years, but he’d love just one sip of a Miller Lite. He also mentioned he’d love a bite of chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and cream gravy—his favorite comfort meal.
Laci and Sara listened with compassion and made sure his wishes were known. When Michelle came in the morning and received the report, she jumped into action to help bring this request to life. She called Cracker Barrel, shared the story behind her request, begged for them to make mashed potatoes for this patient, and together, they made a dying man’s last wish come true.
The joy on his face as he sipped that beer and took a bite of his favorite meal is something we will never forget. Surrounded by his loved ones, holding his Bible, and feeling the love of those around him, he passed peacefully.
What Laci, Sara, and Michelle gave him in his final hours went far beyond medicine—they gave him dignity, comfort, and peace. They listened with open hearts, sat beside him through tears, and treated him as family. Their kindness created a moment of profound humanity and grace.
This experience reminded me of what nursing is truly about. You don’t just care for illnesses—you care for people’s hearts and souls. The compassion these nurses showed wasn’t charted or ordered—it came straight from the goodness within them.
I am deeply thankful for Laci, Sara, and Michelle. They embody the spirit of the DAISY Award, and I am incredibly proud to work alongside them.
