Kindness is so much more than a word, especially in healthcare. As a patient and a health care provider myself I can completely understand the saying “someone's workday can be someone's worst day”. This became very real to me after becoming addicted to my anxiety medication after 20 years as an emergency medical technician. This was a situation I always stigmatized and never thought I'd be wrapped up in. I was admitted to Carrier Clinic for four days. The staff was great, but ONE beacon of light stood out. Tetima, a name that I will always recall. Struggling through a rough day, I was barely hanging on. Tetima was poised, professional, calm, and patient. She took the time to go through my multiple medications in a way that made sense to me. Tetima explained it all by dosage and milligram. She spoke to me eye to eye in a calming tone, providing a level of comfort of an RN who has 40 years in and 20 in EMS. Tetima appeared as a classy, confident, educated, a “nursing angel”. Tetima gave me peace, comfort, and kindness. When I expressed my gratitude she stated “oh that’s nothin’” and smiled.
