Terrie was a saving grace.
My daughter and I live 4 hours away. She has had 13 failed surgeries for pilonidal disease. We came to the Cleveland Clinic seeking care for a resolution that has been horrible over the past 3 years. My daughter underwent surgery and had a wound vac placed by the adult colorectal surgeon. She had 2 bedside dressing changes the following week that were horrific for my daughter. The amount of pain she endured was literal torture for her. This was her fourth wound vac, and with her previous changes, the first one was always done in the OR with sedation. The colorectal team was not listening to our requests and instead opted for my daughter to endure intense pain for hours. She literally screamed for hours. I, at one time, told the surgeon that it was inhumane the amount of pain they were inflicting on her. The plan the surgeon teams decided was that she was to be discharged with home healthcare to do the dressing changes. If my daughter couldn't handle the pain of the changes with the medication as an inpatient, how was she to tolerate the pain during home changes? Terrie was a saving grace. She is the nurse manager on the unit and heard my daughter screaming in pure agony during her changes. She knew that the plan for her was not going to succeed, and the colorectal team should've been listening to us. Terrie met with me separately, and I cried. It felt like we finally had someone on our side. Terrie is a true advocate as she contacted the wound team, colorectal, and other providers needed and informed them of her concerns and mine. She explained that the amount of pain they made my daughter endure was unacceptable, and they needed to remember she is a child. My daughter also has bipolar disorder with previous suicidal tendencies. It has been a fine line walking in regard to her mental health. This entire stay, she has been crying to me that the pain is so severe that she just wants to die. Terrie helped pull the pieces together and form a plan to succeed when we felt we were being pushed aside. She stood up for my daughter because no one else would listen. I am a registered nurse myself, and the compassion she has shown us is admirable and genuine. The amount of pain my daughter has been in has pierced me to my soul. But the amount of care and attention Terrie has given us has renewed our hope. If it weren't for Terrie stepping in when she did and advocating for us, we would already be at home and failing in her care. There's no way she would have healed correctly if it weren't for Terrie advocating for us. Because of this reason, Terrie deserves to be recognized for her service to us.
