Taylor’s expert skills and compassionate style was probably the reason our brother lived.
Our brother was admitted into the CVICU in Urbana after a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. The surgery was not without complications requiring additional surgical teams being involved, as well as an additional surgery. Taylor McArthur was his CVICU nurse for the first three days. She handled the directives from his vast care team, medications, blood, plasma, platelets, blood work, tests, scans and countless other things we didn’t see with ease. She was hyper focused and at his bedside constantly.
Taylor’s expert skills and compassionate style was probably the reason our brother lived. She not only provided exceptional care to him, but her patience extended to the family with an unending number of and oftentimes repeated questions as family continued to arrive from Missouri, Colorado and Texas. She somehow was able to be a calming influence to our family throughout the days, as we knew his chance of survival was slim. On the most difficult day when he was being weaned off of the sedatives, he became agitated from fear. He did not know where he was or why he was there. He began pulling at tubes and wires and became aggressive with her. This petite little woman was right there with the exact amount of firmness/directness he needed. She settled him down, alleviated his agitation/fear quickly, explained what had/was happening. That was his turning point. His road to recovery began. Our brother does not remember much of this experience during the early days of his hospital stay, but he does remember Taylor. Without Taylor’s skills, care and compassion our brother would not be with us today. For that we will be forever grateful.
