I want to nominate Tanya Umbach RN in the UCC for The DAISY Award. Tanya showed a sincere and deep understanding, compassion, patience and professionalism when working with a young Veteran twice in one week. She took care of a Veteran for a minor medical problem on a Saturday. The Veteran returned a few days later and had a syncopal episode that resulted in a rapid response. While her medical professionalism and skill was outstanding in the rapid response, it was what happened after that that really stood out. She quickly remembered her conversations with the patient a few days earlier and quickly realized that the patient was experiencing a severe PTSD episode related to the rapid response. She advocated for the patient by clearing the room of all the extra people and chaos that comes with a rapid response. What I witnessed next was above and beyond. She took extra time and quietly talked with him, remembering their conversations from his previous visit. They talked about his new job, his family, his military experiences...basically his life. The patient clearly remembered and trusted her. The calming and reassuring way she spoke to him was obviously helping this young man thru his crisis. She took it upon herself to contact and bring into the room the patient’s wife which also had a calming effect. When the doctor wanted to give him a dose of anti-anxiety medication and the patient resisted, she calmly listened to him, but again, recognizing his crisis state, reminded him that he was “not the same person she met a few days earlier” and she knows that the man she met a few days ago is who he really is and that “sometimes getting some help to break thru the crisis” is needed and accepting help is not a sign of weakness. The patient agreed and accepted the medication and after a few hours was discharged home. I heard him say “is there someone I can tell about how much you helped me? A way to thank you?” So here is my nomination on his behalf in case he doesn’t. This nurse encompassed everything The DAISY Award represents: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect and Excellence.
