Her presence was not only reassuring and kind, but without her, I would likely have had a more challenging time allowing the doctor to complete the procedure.
Tamala acted with extreme empathy and support during a difficult biopsy procedure. When the doctor penetrated a vessel before anesthesia had set in, I struggled with intense pain. Tamala immediately came to my side, knelt down and held my hand. Her presence was not only reassuring and kind, but without her, I would likely have had a more challenging time allowing the doctor to complete the procedure. As the procedure continued, she grabbed a tissue, wiped away my tears, and even assisted me in blowing my nose. Blood had soiled my robe, and Tamala insisted on wrapping me in a warm blanket while she retrieved a new robe. She brought me water, small mints, and words of reassurance and humor throughout the grueling process. Tamala's professionalism and confidence strengthened my resolve, but her nurturing and friendly demeanor afforded me a sense of humanity and dignity in what was otherwise excruciating. She is the kind of person who belongs in health care and epitomizes what it means to be a giver of care.
