Her empathy made an unbearable situation manageable.
During one of the most frightening moments of our lives, Nurse Lana made an unforgettable difference for our family. My son spent six nights in the PICU following an ileectomy. From the very beginning, Lana created a sense of safety, trust, and compassion that helped us get through an incredibly overwhelming time. Lana made a special connection with us by taking the time to truly see my son as more than a patient. She spoke to him calmly and kindly, explained what she was doing in a way he could understand, and never rushed through interactions. She also checked in with me often, acknowledging how scary it is for a parent to see their child in the PICU. Her warmth and steady presence immediately put us at ease. She consistently went above and beyond in her care. Lana was always proactive—anticipating my son’s needs before we had to ask. She closely monitored his pain and comfort, advocated for adjustments when something didn’t seem right, and followed up to ensure interventions were effective. Even during busy moments, she never made us feel like we were a burden or just another room. Lana demonstrated extraordinary compassion throughout our stay. There were moments when my son was uncomfortable, scared, or emotional, and she met him with patience, reassurance, and kindness every single time. She also showed compassion to me as a parent—offering encouragement, explaining complex medical information clearly, and reminding me that my concerns were valid. Her empathy made an unbearable situation manageable. She actively included our family in the planning of care. Lana took time to explain the plan for each shift, what milestones to expect, and what signs to watch for. She encouraged questions, listened carefully to my observations, and incorporated our input into her care approach. This made us feel like true partners in my son’s recovery rather than passive observers. Lana worked seamlessly with the healthcare team to ensure my son received the best possible care. She communicated clearly with doctors and other nurses, followed through on updates, and advocated for my son when needed. It was clear she was highly respected by her colleagues and deeply committed to teamwork, which gave us tremendous confidence in the care being provided. Because of Lana, our PICU experience—while still incredibly difficult—was filled with compassion, professionalism, and humanity. She embodies everything the DAISY Award represents, and we will forever be grateful for the care she gave to our son and our family.
