He stated that Susan made such an impact and a difference in his life by just being there for him in his time of need. The patient began crying and expressing immense gratitude for Susan.
Susan Gordon is a Nurse with the NurseLink department, which is a department composed of around-the-clock nurses readily available for patients needing assistance after hours, over the weekend, and during holidays.
Susan assisted my transplant patient during a suicidal ideation crisis that lasted from 3 am to 6 am over the weekend. The patient contacted NurseLink, and Susan was the nurse on the other end of the line.
As the patient's Nurse Coordinator, I contacted the patient upon returning to the office to follow up on the patient's current status. The patient stated he had a very rough weekend with suicidal thoughts and did not know where to turn. He expressed that he did not want to bother his family or friends and remembered NurseLink. The patient contacted NurseLink in desperation and expressed his thoughts to Susan.
He stated that receiving a transplant was very life-changing for him, and this has affected his emotional well-being more than he could handle. Per the patient, Susan talked him through his very emotional state and directed him to the ER. The patient stated that upon going to the ER, he felt embarrassed being in the ER and telling the staff he was there because of his suicidal thoughts, so he left without being seen.
As the patient was leaving the ER, he stated that Susan contacted him to confirm he arrived at the ER, and the patient explained why he left, so then Susan offered different numbers and resources for him. He expressed that he was having such a rough time, and Susan helped calm his anxiety and thoughts by just conversing with him and comforting him.
He stated that Susan contacted him more than five times during his crisis that lasted about three hours. He stated he has never had someone care for him in this way and truly help him out of a very dark place. He stated that Susan made such an impact and a difference in his life by just being there for him in his time of need. The patient began crying and expressing immense gratitude for Susan.
As a Nurse myself, I could not be prouder to work alongside Susan and to have my patient express such gratitude during a very emotional and desperate time for him. On behalf of the patient and myself, we want to thank Susan for truly being the definition of a caring, exceptional nurse. This is what nursing is all about.
Thank you, Susan, for helping mend the hearts of our Transplant patients and going above and beyond to ensure patients' safety.
