Situation:

The patient was critically ill with severe shortness of breath, poor cardiac output, obesity, and influenza. She was visiting from out of state and had no external support. Her autistic, non-verbal child—also sick with the flu—was with her. The patient expressed that if her child were removed, she would leave AMA, which posed a significant health risk.

Actions Taken by Surya:

Advocacy: Coordinated efforts with the social worker, Nursing Administration, leadership, and provider team to secure an exception allowing the child to remain with the mother, preventing a dangerous AMA discharge.
Communication: Clearly explained the patient’s and child’s situation to all stakeholders (our leadership, nursing administration, family support team, providers, social worker), advocating as if they were her own family.
Compassion Beyond Duty: Personally purchased specific snacks from her own money to meet the child’s unique dietary needs.
Collaboration: Worked with the Family Support Nursing team to provide toys and comfort measures for the child.
Leadership: Leveraged her extensive experience and knowledge to guide the team through a complex scenario.
