She approached my wife with empathy, kindness, and patience. She sat with her, held her hand, and spoke to her with so much understanding and encouragement.
I would like to nominate Sunitha for the DAISY Award because of the extraordinary care and compassion she showed my wife during a very difficult and frightening time. As her husband, I felt helpless watching her go through days of uncertainty, fear, and frustration with a new diagnosis that even the doctors couldn’t fully agree on. She was subjected to endless tests and bloodwork, which only added to her anxiety and emotional exhaustion. It was hard seeing someone I love so deeply feel so scared and alone. When my wife finally reached her breaking point and refused more bloodwork, Sunitha stepped in. But she didn’t come in with demands or judgment. Instead, she approached my wife with empathy, kindness, and patience. She sat with her, held her hand, and spoke to her with so much understanding and encouragement. Sunitha reminded her that she is strong, that she is doing this for herself and our kids, and that she would get through this. Those words brought my wife comfort in a way that no one else had been able to during her entire stay. Sunitha’s care didn’t feel like “just her job.” She treated my wife as a person, not just a patient. She took the time to make her feel heard and respected, and she even explained options to help ease her anxiety, something no one else had bothered to do. That level of compassion and attentiveness is rare, and it made a huge difference—not just to my wife but to me as well. Knowing she was in the hands of someone like Sunitha gave me a sense of relief I hadn’t felt the entire time she was hospitalized. I will always be grateful for the way Sunitha cared for my wife when she needed it most. She went above and beyond, and her kindness and humanity have left a lasting impression on both of us. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. Sunitha is truly an exceptional nurse.
