Summer takes the time to explain medical procedures, ensuring patients understand and feel comfortable. As a nurse, she shows a genuine interest in the well-being of each patient, building trust and rapport through consistent, thoughtful care.
Summer has been here from the very beginning. She started out as our clinic nurse, turned manager, and now the Cancer Center director.  This progression just goes to show her commitment and dedication to our patients and GRMC as a whole. As a nurse, Summer has always been a patient advocate; always listening to the needs and concerns of every patient that has stepped through the radiation oncology department, greeting them like a niece would an auntie or uncle, or a granddaughter would their grandparents. She loves to hear about their day and will share some of her stories. Any concerns that the patient or staff have, Summer is quick to try to find solutions or answers. She has looked out for the clinic when she was a manager and now as a cancer center director, she tries to find ways to help us improve as a whole department. Summer is always about improvement, exceeding expectations, and going above and beyond the normal standard of care. Anyone who knows what worth means knows that having a director like Summer, you feel reassured that every time you come to work, knowing she always has your back.

***

I’ve worked with Summer since the start of my career at GRMC. She was a Nurse Manager at that time and was directly involved in patient care before becoming a director. I’ve always seen her as compassionate, attentive, and empathetic. She actively listens to patients' concerns and provides both physical and emotional support. Summer takes the time to explain medical procedures, ensuring patients understand and feel comfortable. As a nurse, she shows a genuine interest in the well-being of each patient, building trust and rapport through consistent, thoughtful care. She is patient, approachable, and consistently goes above and beyond to make patients feel valued and respected. I remember Summer always feeling bad and guilty whenever something happened to a patient. She would never stop thinking about it until she could make things right. She even reaches out to patients on her own. I also admire her honesty. I also remember her encouraging patients, especially those who had lost hope due to their cancer, to continue with their treatments. Her support had a significant impact on their decision to proceed with treatment, and she made a lasting difference in their lives. She is determined when it comes to patient care. She won't stop until she gets everything needed for the patient, and that’s who Summer Medler is.
