Throughout my hospitalization, Steph treated me with immense kindness and care, but also never hesitated to push me to be stronger.
Eighteen years after my first spinal fusion as a pediatric patient, I learned that I needed another. This time; however, I would be an adult patient with adult responsibilities- including advocating for myself and holding myself accountable for my recovery. After a rough first night where I woke up almost exactly every two hours in pain, Steph introduced herself to me the next morning and immediately made it her priority to update my pain management strategy. By the afternoon, I was able to sleep soundly.
The next day, when it was time for me to get up and start walking, Steph helped me get in and out of bed multiple times during her shift- I wasn’t happy about it at the time, but her persistence gave me the confidence to advocate for myself and trust a different nurse to help me get up again later that night.
On my final evening, I waited until Steph’s shift and made it a point to take my longest walk yet, so she could see how much progress she’d helped me achieve in just a few short days. Her cheers from the end of the hall were all the motivation I needed to keep going, even when I was tired.
Throughout my hospitalization, Steph treated me with immense kindness and care, but also never hesitated to push me to be stronger. I’m so thankful for her care and the positive impression it has left on me and my family.
