Thanks to Stephanie’s efforts, the head nurse visited and provided overnight toiletries, sheets, blankets, and a pillow so I could stay by my husband’s side.
My husband underwent a partial nephrectomy, and when he came out of anesthesia, he was extremely angry, disoriented, and at risk of harming himself. In that moment, Nurse Stephanie did what felt impossible. She remained calm, patient, and compassionate, and de-escalated the situation so the team could safely continue his care. That was only the beginning. My husband was not the easiest patient during our stay, yet Stephanie never wavered. At one point, I even told her she could charm a venomous snake because of the way she handled every challenge with such skill and kindness. While my husband was recovering, I was overwhelmed with stress and emotion from the surgery itself, and then a winter storm made everything even harder. With an hour drive home and limited options, I felt like it was all becoming too much. Stephanie immediately stepped in to support me as well. She connected me with the hospital social worker, and when it became clear that the Fisher House would not be able to open due to the storm, she continued to advocate for us.

Thanks to Stephanie’s efforts, the head nurse visited and provided overnight toiletries, sheets, blankets, and a pillow so I could stay by my husband’s side. That kindness meant more than I can express. I am forever grateful to the entire SICU nursing team, and especially Nurse Stephanie, who consistently made sure our needs were met, not only my husband’s, but mine as well. Her compassion, professionalism, and dedication made an incredibly difficult experience more manageable, and I will never forget the care she gave our family.
