Stav made a special connection with me through conversations we had about our families. Stav knew I had an anxiety disorder, as it was noted on my chart. I was in the hospital for a serious infection, and the antibiotic that was required was one I was allergic to. Despite the seriousness of the situation, I was calm and felt confident in her care.

This is an example of how vulnerability builds connection and trust. Stav would chat with me a bit while working; she in fact shared details about her experience coming here from another country and the challenges she had as an Israeli immigrant, as well as some happy anecdotes about her daughter and her husband.

Sometimes people are afraid to tell you details that are not all positive in describing their story for fear of being judged or misunderstood. Stav was open and honest. She knew I was probably afraid and very vulnerable, and found a way to relate to those feelings, which showed her great empathy and made me feel safe in her care.

Stav went above and beyond by talking with me before she left her shift to ensure that everything was okay before leaving me with the next nurse. I knew she was exhausted, but she always took time to talk with me.
