August 2026 Honoree
Sophia Walker, BSN, RN
I would like to nominate an extraordinary nurse, Sophia, whose compassion, presence, and unwavering support carried me through two of the most emotional and vulnerable moments of my life. She was my nurse during my ECV procedure and later during my C-section, and the impact she had on me and my family is something I will never forget. I think about Sophia every time I think about my birth experience. I went into this hoping for a natural birth, and having to have a C-section was incredibly emotional for me. I was sad and overwhelmed, and Sophia did everything she could to comfort me and help me process what was happening. She reassured me in a way that made me feel understood, supported, and never alone. She felt like a friend I had always known.
During my ECV, my husband was unable to be there, and I was terrified. Sophia stepped in with empathy and calm that felt like having a close friend at my bedside. She talked me through every step, noticed the exact moments when I started to panic, and grounded me with her voice and presence. When things got more stressful, she kept reassuring me and went above and beyond. She even played the song that we eventually named our daughter after. That thoughtful gesture completely changed the energy in the room and brought me so much comfort. In that moment, she was not just providing medical care. She was caring for my heart. When it came time for my C-section, my anxiety was overwhelming. I had a full-blown panic attack, and once again, Sophia was the one who brought me back to a place of calm. She held my hand, spoke to me with encouragement, and made me feel safe during a moment when everything felt out of control. Her ability to stay calm, compassionate, and attentive while I was struggling shows the kind of nurse she truly is. She is exceptional in every sense of the word.
Even after her shift ended and even when I was no longer her patient, Sophia still checked on me. When she found out I was still in the hospital after she had a few days off, she made a point to come by simply to make sure I was okay. That level of dedication is rare. It was not required. It was not expected. It is simply who she is. She is a nurse who genuinely cares. Sophia’s kindness, intuition, skill, and humanity improved my birth experience. She helped me find peace in a moment that felt scary and unfamiliar. I truly believe she exemplifies everything the DAISY Award stands for. She deserves to be recognized for the extraordinary and compassionate care she gives, not only through her actions but through the heart she brings to every patient she encounters. I will remember her forever, and I can say without hesitation that she is one of the most incredible nurses I have ever met.
