Sofia's kindness and advocacy do not just prevent mistakes; they uplift the people around her.
I would like to nominate my coworker, Sofia, for the DAISY Award for her exceptional compassion, professionalism, and patient advocacy. Recently, I was caring for a patient on an insulin drip when a significant change to the drip rate was ordered. The change didn’t seem consistent with safe practice, but after double-checking the order and clarifying with the provider, I still felt unsure. Even though I had concerns, I began to doubt myself and wondered if I simply wasn’t understanding the clinical reasoning behind it. Feeling embarrassed and uncertain, I asked Sofia to take a quick look. Without any judgment, she immediately reassured me that my concerns were valid. She carefully reviewed the situation, confirmed that the change did not appear safe, and helped advocate for a reassessment of the order. Her calm, supportive approach gave me the confidence to continue speaking up.

After additional discussion, the provider recognized the discrepancy, corrected the order, and expressed appreciation for the catch. Sofia's steady presence played an essential role in ensuring the patient remained safe. This situation is just one example of who Sofia is every single day. She fosters an environment where questions are welcomed, and safety is prioritized. She has an incredible ability to make people feel supported, whether they're patients, coworkers, families, or visitors. No matter how busy or stressful the day is, Sofia brings encouragement, warmth, and clarity. She makes our unit a safer place, and she makes the people around her feel valued, capable, and cared for. I am grateful to work alongside someone who embodies the spirit of nursing so naturally. Sofia's kindness and advocacy do not just prevent mistakes; they uplift the people around her.
