Sophia Ferrero, BSN, RN
I am writing to nominate Nurse Sophia Teresa Ferrerro for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary care she provided to my daughter. Sophia was consistently present, attentive, and deeply compassionate, caring for my daughter as if she were her own child.
Sophia went above and beyond to keep my daughter comfortable and ensure her care was always timely and precise. She was consistently on time with every medication, which was especially critical for managing sickle cell pain crises. She rounded not only on my daughter but also on my husband and me, checking in on how we were doing, asking if we had questions or needed anything, and making sure we felt supported and informed throughout our stay.
One moment that stands out is when my daughter was due for her IV medication while we were in the MRI department waiting. Understanding how important timely management is for sickle cell patients, Sophia did not wait for us to return to the unit. Instead, she came to the MRI department herself, found someone who could help set up the IV, and ensured our daughter received her medication on time. That act of advocacy, initiative, and coordination showed us how deeply she cared about our daughter’s well-being and comfort.
Sophia also cared for us as parents. She recognized our anxiety and exhaustion and made sure we were included in the plan of care and updated us constantly. She never made us feel like a burden, even when we were emotional or asked repeated questions. Her calm presence, clear communication, and genuine empathy made an overwhelming and frightening experience more manageable and gave us confidence that our daughter is in the best hands.
Sophia embodies the spirit of DAISy Award - providing not only excellent nursing care, but also genuine humanity, dignity and respect to patients and their families. Our family will never forget the impact she had on our daughter’s healing and on our hearts during those days.
