The Veteran had a hard time talking about how grateful he was for the care Sonny provided without breaking down in tears. He stated Sonny helped him through some stuff the night he was admitted. "If it were up to me, I would vote him the #1 nurse in this whole hospital." I asked him why, and he told me a bit about his work experience and about meeting people who are mediocre versus those who are exceptional in their careers. People who are exceptional in their careers are rare, he says. Sonny is exceptional in his career. "I want to make sure Sonny knows that he is good at his job; he needs to hear it. Exceptional people should be recognized. Sonny is in this category. I can't say this about many people, but Sonny is exceptional in his profession." I asked him to tell me a bit about what Sonny did that made such an impact. He sort of looked at me exasperated and couldn't find the words. He said "he just knew" and again was teary-eyed. "He made me feel cared about, he is compassionate", "Doesn't have a mean bone in his whole body'. Stated he never let my ice melt or my water empty, "Hell, he knew I needed a turkey sandwich 30 minutes before I knew I wanted one - and he had it ready!'
