I was recently hospitalized during a severe asthma exacerbation and COVID-19 infection, which was an extremely stressful and uncertain time for me. I had never been to this hospital before, and I felt scared, overwhelmed, and vulnerable. From the moment Sonja began caring for me, I felt a sense of comfort and safety that I desperately needed.

Sonja showed me true compassion. She didn’t just talk to me; she listened.

She took the time to sit with me, speak with me, and truly hear my concerns. She expressed genuine care for my health and well-being, and it meant everything to me to know that someone was taking my fears as seriously as I was.

During a stay where communication initially felt difficult and confusing, Sonja became my calm in the chaos. She helped bridge gaps, answered questions, and eased my anxiety in ways that words can hardly describe. I have been hospitalized many times throughout my life due to asthma, COVID, and other complex health issues, and Sonja stands out as one of the most thoughtful and respectful nurses I have ever had.

Knowing she would be my nurse made an enormous difference in my mental and emotional well-being. On days when I felt defeated, scared, or emotionally drained, Sonja helped me find hope and stay positive.

Because this was a new hospital, no one was familiar with my complex medical history, which added to my fear. Sonja always took the time to check on me, even when she was incredibly busy. She explained everything in a way I could understand, especially knowing I also have a brain injury. She made sure I felt included in my care and never made me feel like just another patient.

Sometimes it was just a simple conversation or a few kind words, but those moments meant more than she will ever know. Sonja’s presence alone helped ease my fear and anxiety and made me feel seen, valued, and cared for as a person. I will never forget her patience, kindness, and compassion even in the smallest moments.

Sonja represents everything a nurse should be and so much more. I am forever grateful for the care, comfort, and humanity she showed me during one of the hardest times of my life. If ever a person is truly deserving of this award, I would like it to be awarded to Nurse Sonja. You truly will never know the impact you've made in my life in such a short period of time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and my family thanks you from the bottom of theirs.
