I admire the way Sonia Zuniga showed up for her patient. Many other nurses who had the patient would have thought the patient had lost hope and would have proceeded to provide minimal support. But she didn't do that. She made all the efforts a prudent nurse should make and tried to make his day better, even a little bit, such as ensuring his position was comfortable, by talking to him and getting to know his story, and by joking and laughing with him. And she didn't wait for only respiratory therapy to provide suctioning, nurses cover that skill, too! So, if the patient required it, she provided suctioning for him as well, because waiting for the RT would have caused more discomfort for the patient. Her mindset was also outstanding. She considered the way she practices nursing, the basics of what nurses need to do. And regardless of how other nurses show up or not, she holds herself to her own standard by caring for patients with the utmost compassion that she can.
