It is with great pride and deep appreciation that I nominate Dr. Sneha Thomas for the DAISY Leader Award. Ms. Thomas is an outstanding leader whose commitment to excellence and compassion sets a high standard for patient care. She consistently advocates for both veterans and staff, ensuring that every patient encounter reflects dignity, respect, and empathy.

Under her leadership, the specialty clinic has seen significant improvements in efficiency, teamwork, and morale, all while keeping the needs of veterans at the forefront.

Her leadership is characterized by:

Compassionate Care:
She goes above and beyond to ensure veterans feel heard, respected, and cared for.

Support for Staff:
She fosters a culture of teamwork and professional growth, always encouraging staff to reach their full potential.

Excellence in Leadership:
Her dedication has improved patient outcomes, enhanced clinic operations, and uplifted staff morale.

Dr. Thomas provides a haven of safety, both physically and emotionally, for her team. She creates an environment where trust, compassion, mutual respect, professional development, and ethical behavior are modeled and supported. She ensures that quality patient care is maintained and that nurses have access to the technology, equipment, and information they need to deliver exceptional care.

She is a skilled chief nurse of human and financial resources, balancing staffing, supplies, and operational needs with precision. She drives team development, resiliency, and competency, and ensures that staff are meaningfully recognized for their contributions to veterans and their families.

Dr. Thomas is a compassionate and accessible leader, available 24/7 to support her team. She advocates for her staff, ensures their needs are communicated to leadership, and clearly conveys organizational priorities back to her team. She encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and mentors new managers and colleagues with patience and wisdom. Her ability to balance leadership responsibilities with a strong team spirit makes her an invaluable asset and an actual role model within our outpatient specialty clinics, GI, Cath lab, and dialysis.

Her actions speak volumes:

Dr. Thomas is specially recognized and commended for her exceptional leadership, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to the Cath Lab during a period of significant operational challenges. Over the past several months, the Cath Lab faced a critical staffing shortage due to the prolonged vacancy of the Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) position. This shortage, driven largely by non-competitive salary offerings, led to the cancellation of essential procedures and required a cardiology fellow to step in and fulfill MIT responsibilities, an extraordinary measure that underscored the urgency of the situation.

Her response to this crisis was nothing short of exemplary. Through tireless advocacy and strategic action, she successfully secured a 25% salary increase for Cath Lab Technicians and implemented a sign-on bonus to attract qualified candidates. These efforts were not only instrumental in stabilizing the department but also demonstrated her deep commitment to both patient care and staff well-being.

Despite the challenges posed by the high cost of living in South Florida and the lure of higher-paying positions in the private sector, her leadership ensured that the remaining team members felt seen, supported, and valued. The emotional response of one technician, brought to tears upon hearing the news of salary increases, speaks volumes about the impact of her work. Her dedication has made a lasting difference in the lives of her colleagues and the veterans we serve.

During one of the most emotionally challenging events in the Cath Lab, the unexpected passing of a veteran, Dr. Thomas demonstrated extraordinary compassion and leadership. In the absence of the Nurse Manager, she remained present with the staff throughout the crisis, offering unwavering physical, emotional, and spiritual support.

When the team was visibly shaken, fearful, and overwhelmed, Dr. Thomas provided calm reassurance, created a safe space for staff to express their grief, and ensured that the veteran’s family received the dignity, empathy, and comfort they deserved. Her presence was not only a source of strength but also a reminder of the core values we uphold in the VA: respect, integrity, and compassion.

She facilitated moments of reflection, encouraged open dialogue among the team, and helped guide them through the emotional aftermath with grace and professionalism.

Dr. Thomas has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the professional growth and development of her team. She actively supports opportunities for advancement and learning, as evidenced by her sponsorship of my attendance at the NOLA U January Conference. This experience was instrumental in equipping me with the knowledge and confidence needed during my transition from Assistant Nurse Manager to Interim Nurse Manager.

Additionally, Dr. Thomas has been a steadfast advocate for innovation and quality improvement. Her support of our Yellow Belt project focused on the Colo Wrap initiative, not only empowering staff engagement but also reinforcing a culture of continuous improvement within the department.

She supported me during the Joint Commission and Cardiology VISN 8 surveys, recognizing that I am a new interim manager. She has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying or hostile environments, ensuring a safe and respectful workplace. She consistently shares information in a timely manner, and her thorough knowledge of VA policies, mission, and vision ensures that her guidance is always wise and grounded in integrity. She is strict in following VA policy, setting a standard of excellence for all.

Dr. Thomas consistently demonstrates and maintains ICARE values in every aspect of her work. She approaches her duties with honesty and ethical commitments, shows genuine compassion towards patients and colleagues, takes responsibility for her actions, treats everyone with dignity, and strives for higher standards in patient care. Her embodiment of these core values creates a positive, supportive environment and inspires those around her, making her truly deserving of this recognition.

Dr. Thomas creates a setting where compassion is valued, and as a result, the staff treats veterans and their families with deep humanity. She exemplifies the DAISY Award due to her extraordinary compassion, clinical skill, and leadership. Her work not only impacts the veterans we serve but also inspires her colleagues to strive for excellence every day.
