Skylar has blossomed in the role of charge nurse and does an outstanding job prioritizing the many responsibilities.
Skylar Simpson provides outstanding care to our patients and is taking on many other projects and responsibilities that go well beyond the bedside. Skylar started his nursing career as New Graduate Nurse on the sixth floor in 2017. Since then, he has grown immensely and is now a relief charge nurse on the night shift. In this role, he manages patient admissions and discharges, patient assignments, ensures the unit is staffed appropriately and acts as a resource to the bedside nurses.

Skylar has blossomed in the role of charge nurse and does an outstanding job prioritizing the many responsibilities. He also handles difficult patient and family situations with ease and professionalism ensuring our staff is safe and that the patient or family’s concerns are heard and taken care of. Outside of his clinical work, Skylar participates in our unit’s Professional Governance Committee and the house-wide Save Our Skin Committee. As a member of Professional Governance, Skylar acts as a liaison between the bedside clinical staff and the leadership team. Skylar helped facilitate “listening sessions” for our unit. A listening session was offered to staff as a safe space where they could bring up frustrations without leadership present. Skylar and other members of the Professional Governance committee worked closely with staff members of human resources to facilitate the sessions, gather the information, and then present the common themes to the Level 6 leadership team. He also helps implement different projects and processes as needed.

For example, Skylar worked closely with one of our Behavioral Health Specialists (BHS) to develop a daily rounding tool to improve communication between the BHS and the RN. Improved communication between the two parties ensures our patients are receiving the best care possible. As stated above, Skylar is a member of the house-wide Save Our Skin Committee. His participation on this committee includes auditing patients to ensure our Pressure Injury Prevention bundle is being followed, attends meetings, and then provides education to our staff. Skylar has noticed a lack of knowledge for some of our nurses regarding the various aspects of the bundle. He is in the process of implementing a project to increase nurse awareness around the bundle elements in a simulation type of format. With all of the extra work Skylar has taken on over the last couple of years, he is in the process of applying to become a Clinical Nurse III. His dedication to our patients, their families, and our staff is truly what makes Skylar stand out as a DAISY Award Honoree. Thank you!
