My grandfather had a fall at home leading to a traumatic brain injury. This was not something he was going to survive, and we made the decision to move to comfort care. Each person we encountered during his time in the ER was amazing, showing care and compassion for our family. We were moved from the ER to a room on the 4th floor neuro unit around midnight. Skylar, our assigned nurse, was there not only to care for my grandfather in his final hours, but also to care for us. My 86-year-old grandmother has dementia, and as the night went on, she became more confused. Skylar got her a cot so she could lie beside my grandfather and hold his hand. Skylar was there providing care to make sure my grandfather had medications to help him be comfortable, even reaching out to the ordering physician to make sure he had everything he needed for maximum comfort. We want to thank her for advocating for what he needed. It takes a special caretaker to know what a family needs. There is a fine balance between knowing when to be present and when to give space, and Skylar has mastered that balance. When my grandfather passed on, she gave us time with him and helped us talk through the next steps. Our family would like to nominate Skylar for a DAISY Award and let her know our family thanks her for her dedication to her profession and the care and compassion she showed all of us as we were losing a man who was our world

Thank you, Skylar, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
