My family had the pleasure of having Silas for two overnight shifts. Silas was extremely knowledgeable and compassionate. Each time he had to treat my grandmother, he addressed her by name and explained what was going to happen. Silas was our nurse for the first night without the ventilator. My grandmother's breathing was extremely forced and labored. Silas recognized this from the hall, contacted the physician, and administered the change in medications.
I understand that this is his job; however, he acted with compassion. Silas emphasized to us that we could call on him at any point we thought my grandmother was uncomfortable or in pain. It was Silas who alerted my uncle and my mother late in the night when he thought it might be nearing the end. For this, I am eternally grateful. I know they would have regretted it if they had been sleeping for her final moments.
My family will never be able to thank Silas for all that he did. This nomination is a small token of our eternal gratitude.
