Shelly was not backing down. I was very impressed that Shelly was not going to let it go and advocate for her patient. It is not often that I see someone stand up for their patients like Shelly did today!
Today, I witnessed a nurse go above and beyond to get her patient the care they needed. Shelly was the only nurse who had the training to give chemotherapy to the patients on the floor today. Her patient was sent to dialysis early this morning. Dialysis was in such a hurry to get the patient down to them that the patient didn’t get to have breakfast. Once they arrived at dialysis, it was discovered that they were going to need new access. So they were to return to our floor and then go to the I.R. for new access to be placed. Once the patient was back on our unit, that is when Shelly stepped up to the plate! She needed to give the patient their chemo treatment. To do so before dialysis would be a wasted treatment. The person in dialysis kept insisting that the patient go down for dialysis at 5 pm tonight. Shelly kept explaining to the dialysis person that she was the only one who could give chemo to the patient, and she was scheduled off at 7:30 pm. Shelly told her over and over that a late dialysis was not going to work. She also told the gal that he was denied food because he had to go to dialysis this morning and could not eat. Then Shelly said to the gal, “I guess between you and I, we need to figure out a way for this patient to get the care that he needs and deserves”. Shelly was not backing down. I was very impressed that Shelly was not going to let it go and advocate for her patient. It is not often that I see someone stand up for their patients like Shelly did today! As I was writing this, another patient’s family member went up to Shelly and said she was a great advocate for her patient. My sentiments EXACTLY!
