I would like to nominate Shelby for recognition because she made an extraordinary difference in our experience on the day of my surgery. From the beginning, Shelby was warm, engaging, and immediately reassuring. Surgery is stressful even when everything is expected to go well, and we also experienced a delay before my procedure. Shelby turned what could have been a long and anxious wait into something that felt calm, personal, and even enjoyable. She talked with us, shared stories, recommended books, and kept the conversation flowing in a way that made the time pass quickly. She has a wonderful ability to connect with people naturally while still remaining completely attentive to her clinical responsibilities.

She was also exceptionally gentle and competent. I particularly remember how carefully she placed my IV. It was one of those small clinical moments that says a great deal about a nurse’s skill and consideration for the patient. I felt from the outset that I was in very capable hands. What stood out just as much, though, was the way Shelby cared for my husband as part of the experience. Because we are not local, she spent considerable time talking with him about places where he could get a good meal while I was in surgery. More importantly, she recognized that he was hesitant about leaving the hospital. She did not simply tell him that it was fine to go. She explained what would happen while I was in surgery, how he would be contacted, and what the process would be if anything changed. She made sure he understood that he could leave for a little while without worrying that he would somehow miss something important. I was enormously grateful for that. Knowing that she had put him at ease helped put me at ease as well.

There was also a moment that showed an especially compassionate side of her nursing care. In conversation, we mentioned a previous hospital experience involving the loss of a child. Shelby responded with such genuine sweetness, sensitivity, and kindness. She did not make the moment uncomfortable or clinical. She simply met us with compassion. That meant more than I can adequately express. Shelby understood that taking care of a surgical patient is not limited to medications, IVs, vital signs, and procedures. She cared for the people in front of her. She recognized our anxiety, included my husband in her care, helped us feel comfortable in an unfamiliar hospital, and made a potentially stressful period feel remarkably human. By the time I went back for surgery, I felt calmer, supported, and confident.

The long delay had passed surprisingly quickly because Shelby had filled that time with conversation, humor, stories, and genuine connection. She even gave me so many book recommendations that I am now planning to read one of them. Shelby represents what exceptional nursing looks like to a patient and family: highly competent, gentle, observant, compassionate, engaging, and genuinely invested in making people feel safe. She did far more than was technically required of her, and those efforts had a meaningful impact on both me and my husband. She was a real source of comfort on an important day, and I hope she receives the recognition she deserves.

Thank you, Shelby, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
