My husband was transferred to the Neuro ICU from the medical ICU. Shelby was one of the many nurses he had during his 10-day stay. Shelby was the nurse scheduled with my husband on the day we were told my husband's prognosis and that we would be taking him off life support. She was there for my family and me. She helped me navigate the donor process and was with me for 3 days while we waited for the donor process to be completed. She made sure that I was fed and slept. She supported me while I advocated for my husband. She joked with me and allowed me to share my feelings and tell stories about my husband while I processed that I would soon lose him. She was willing to step away from the OR if it would make me more comfortable, but was also willing to be there for me. My husband's donation day was delayed by one day, so Shelby offered to come in and work on her day off so I would have a familiar, welcoming person with me. She was not allowed to be there, but I knew she fought for it for my benefit.
