I would like to nominate Sheilah Smith, NP, for a Nurse Ethics Award in recognition of her outstanding work and unwavering commitment to ethical nursing practice. Her compassion and advocacy exemplify VA values and demonstrate a deep respect for the dignity and worth of every Veteran she serves. Sheilah approaches each concern with genuine empathy and non-judgmental support, always considering the complex roles of the care team and the unique needs of each individual. Her ethical stance is evident in her ability to navigate difficult cases with integrity, ensuring that the Veteran’s rights and dignity are prioritized.

In a specific instance, Sheilah and I collaborated to address the needs of a Veteran with complex medical and mental health issues. Her willingness to meet the Veteran where he was—without judgment—helped build trust and confidence in his VA care. The Veteran has since become more open to following treatment recommendations, thanks to Sheilah’s warm, respectful, and ethical approach. Her steadfast support and commitment to ethical nursing principles have greatly contributed to the Veteran's safety and opportunities for recovery. Sheilah’s dedication to upholding integrity, respect, and compassionate care truly embodies the highest standards of nursing ethics.
