Clinical excellence and compassionate care are what Daisy award recipients represent, and, in that spirit, I would like to nominate Sheila Grospe. Sheila is the nurse manager for the specialty clinics at FHCC and was instrumental in the opening of the new hemodialysis clinic through her leadership. She took on the role of project manager in the absence of a strategic planning manager and got the ball rolling on the multitude of tasks needed to open the new clinic. She worked tirelessly to bring the right people into the room and was devoted to doing all she could to ensure the unit opened successfully. Sheila is not a dialysis nurse, so she worked to ensure all clinical details were addressed by partnering with others, demonstrating her commitment to clinical excellence. She always had a Plan B when challenges arose and leaned on local and national subject-matter experts for their dialysis expertise.
During the go-live, she gently but firmly asked the support staff to be mindful of the sheer volume of their presence, and some people left because it was overwhelming for the veteran, which speaks to her commitment to compassionate care. During the VACO inspection prior to the unit opening, one of the inspectors commended her for the work she had done to prepare the unit for opening, especially since she is not a dialysis nurse, which demonstrates that a good leader gets the job done regardless of their clinical background. Her positive energy is infectious, and her commitment to her staff and the veterans exemplifies the best of nursing.
