We wish to recognize Sheila for her commitment to delivering care in a compassionate manner, being an advocate for her patients, and truly caring. My wife became acutely ill while we were vacationing, resulting in an eight-day stay. While the team of providers was outstanding in their treatment, communication, and spending time with us on "follow-ups after a visit", Sheila made a strong impression.

While going through testing to determine the source of her illness, both of us were filled with concern and anxiety as each result was no closer to the root cause, although thankful for the rule-outs. Sheila, sensing our concerns, took the time to verify we understood our conversations with the providers, asked us if we had additional questions for her or the providers, and provided a warm smile and laughter.

Sheila often checked on my wife outside her normal rounds, and even one day when assigned to another unit. Those visits allowed my wife to focus on something other than the hospitalization. Sheila also made time to separately check in on me to see how I was holding up and had any additional questions. Sheila reminded us that while she is part of our care team, she is our advocate and spent time talking with us about the day's status, results, and what various options meant. She did all this in a very professional and personal manner.

On discharge, while assigned to another unit, she asked if we would allow her to wheel my wife out, as she was so proud she made it to discharge. It warmed my wife’s heart! As a former healthcare CEO, Sheila's approach to patient care and patient advocacy so moved me that I found myself reflecting on how fortunate we were to have Sheila during our stay. It is with a sense of gratitude that we put Sheila forward for this award! Sheila truly encompasses the meaning of the DAISY Award.
