Shay also decided to stay past her shift to stay for my delivery, despite the fact that her day was filled with chaos.
My wife and I welcomed our daughter earlier this month. She is our first baby, so one can imagine the nerves that come with that. Shay is my wife’s coworker, and we were lucky enough to have her as our nurse. Shay’s calm presence made all the difference not only for my wife but for me as well! She was the perfect balance of giving us the tools to help get through labor and giving us the space to be together when needed. She helped me feel comfortable in a very unnerving environment and helped me know how to support my wife in her most vulnerable state. I’ve heard stories from my wife of what a great, knowledgeable, and caring nurse Shay is, but to experience it firsthand was amazing. If I could nominate Shay a million times, I would. She is the perfect example of what it means to be a nurse at heart: kind, caring, compassionate, and calm. She made our experience amazing, and we will forever be in debt to her for the care she gave us during the most memorable day of our lives.

I cannot begin to express how thankful I am to have had Shay by my side during my labor & delivery experience. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Shay as a coworker for the past few years. Her love of laboring patients is not only inspirational to me but to all of my coworkers who work beside her.

When I arrived as a patient on the same floor where I work, I was greeted with Shay’s warmth and calm demeanor. All of the anxious thoughts that were racing through my mind while laboring with my first baby instantly melted away because of her. My room was decorated with warm lights, a galaxy projector, lavender essential oil, and positive affirmation signs. All of these things are a part of her labor coping cart that she started recently on the floor to help women cope in labor. A combination of these items and Shay’s calming presence helped my labor progress perfectly. She talked me through each agonizing contraction as I was waiting for my epidural and helped my body relax in its most intense state. She even guided my husband to help him know how to help me cope.

Shay also decided to stay past her shift to stay for my delivery, despite the fact that her day was filled with chaos. Right before my delivery, my daughter's heart rate dropped for several minutes. Shay came in with a clear and calm mind and did all of the steps needed to help my daughter arrive safely. Minutes later, my daughter was in my arms. There is not one doubt in my mind that Shay helped me get the labor & delivery of my dreams. The best thing about it is that I didn’t feel like I was receiving “special” treatment…I just felt like one of Shay’s patients. I’ve seen her give the same care to each and every one of her patients that she labors with. I am so grateful to have been able to experience being one of her patients. Not only did she impact my delivery experience directly, but she also impacted how I will labor with my future patients. I will forever be grateful to her and the exceptional nursing care that I received on the most special day of my entire life.
