Our unit has had a patient in our care for roughly 2 weeks, intubated & critically ill with a very involved & very concerned family. This patient had a difficult intubation & an even more difficult wean from the ventilator. I nominate Shauna, who has served as this patient’s nurse for much of his stay. Shauna has never faltered in her ongoing efforts to continue engaging & encouraging this patient through every weaning trial, acting as his biggest cheerleader towards getting him intubated and comforting this patient and his family after every failed attempt to wean. Shauna never lost her focused and positive attitude, going above and beyond to provide the best care when the patient was visibly frustrated. After multiple shifts & multiple unsuccessful trials, the patient’s care team was able to extubate this patient. With a busy patient assignment & precepting a new employee, Shauna made time to celebrate with the patient. Shauna offered to take this patient outside to the garden to celebrate for the first time in over a week. It is a great honor to nominate Shauna for the wonderful care, inspiring spirit & human kindness she provided.
