Shannon is kind, considerate, and knowledgeable. Her compassion and care with complex situations really stand out. The patient’s well-being and outcomes are always her focus.

Her kindness and patience put people at ease. She addresses not only the medical needs but also the psychosocial needs of her patients. She coordinates safe discharge plans, considering housing, food, and medication insecurities. Her knowledge and communication with the whole care team help reduce stress and anxiety for her patients and their families.

She recently had a patient who lived in a "modern, off-the-grid" tent during the ice storm. His tent was destroyed by a tree limb. He had nowhere to go, and his family lived out of state. He had a recent total joint replacement with MRMC and was going to OPPT in Hohenwald.

Upon visiting with him, we found out that he owned a dog, and he was worried about what would happen to it while he was in rehabilitation for the injury to his THA that he sustained during the storm. His friend was feeding the dog but would not be able to care for the animal much longer because his friend was moving.

The patient said he could stay in his truck and do OPPT in Hohenwald but had nowhere to bathe or cook since his tent housing was destroyed.

Shannon reached out to a friend who knew about temporary shelters in Hohenwald due to the storm. She called and checked, and they were able to take the patient. He was so grateful to be close enough that he could drive to check on his dog and feed it. He would also be able to go to OPPT and complete his therapy.

She would never look for recognition for what she would call "just doing my job" by ensuring timely discharges and reducing the patient’s potential risk for readmission. She advocates for her patients and communicates their needs to help others understand their situation.
