She was born for the profession.
A little over 2 weeks ago, I called 911 because I thought my husband was having a heart attack. He was transported to Satilla Memorial Hospital in Waycross, Georgia. After spending a few hours in the ER, which, in our opinion, is top-notch, and having all the necessary tests, it was determined that he was having a severe gallbladder attack and that his gallbladder was highly infected. He was moved from the ER to a room on the 2nd floor, where he was served by the most compassionate, selfless nurse that we had ever met.
Her name was Shandi, such a unique name for such a wonderful person. Shandi is not the type of nurse who just shows up for work, does her shift, and goes home. She was born for the profession. My husband was not the best patient. At times, he was hard to deal with from being scared and nervous, and in pain. Shandi was always very patient and empathetic.
After the doctors would make their rounds, she would come to our room and ask if we had any questions and do her best to explain exactly what was going on in terms that we could understand. My husband was in a great deal of pain, and she was always quick to try to get him the relief that he needed. At one point, he was so upset and scared, and she was the only one who was able to calm him down with her caring and attentive ways. Her bedside manner was amazing.
We were transferred from the Waycross Hospital to a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, and were cared for by a lot of nurses, but none stood out in those nine days like Shandi Harper did. She is a great time manager, effective communicator, hardworking, detail-oriented, caring, and compassionate nurse: all qualities that nurses should strive to have. We would watch the clock while she was there and dread to see her have to go home.
***
Shandi Harper is caring and very educated at her job. She is very respectful. She makes you feel like family. I feel like she became one of my own daughters. She goes above and beyond the call of duty to take care of me. From the time she signs on to the time she signs off. She is always there for me.
