We had a gravely ill patient arrive in the children's ED, and Sergio was serving as the charge nurse. The patient arrived via a flight crew. While anticipating his arrival, Sergio delegated clear roles and responsibilities and prepared the ED team. The parents traveled separately from the patient and came in a private vehicle.

Despite the hard work and efforts of the team, the patient passed away prior to the parents' arrival. Sergio prepared and coordinated the arrival of the parents. Once they arrived, he assisted in translating for the family during the emotional and difficult conversations revealing the medical details of how their child was helped, but ultimately was unable to be saved. Sergio stood by their side as they grieved the overwhelming loss of their son. It is never easy to witness the death of a child, but he remained with that family long after his shift had ended to allow the family to have an easier time communicating with all of the staff. He was not only a nurse that day but a loving, compassionate, selfless human being who held the space for grief and loss. We also acknowledge and appreciate how he continues to bring his joy, light, laughter, and sarcasm to the ED.
