Savannah held her hand, talked to her, comforted her, and cried. She treated her as she would a family member. I was so impressed with how she cared for this patient.
Savannah is fairly new to nursing, with just a year under her belt but you can quickly see that nursing is her calling. Recently, we had a patient, Ms. M, who was on comfort care. When we came in, we expected the patient not to live through the night. The day charge commented that she assigned the patient to Savannah because she knew Savannah was such a compassionate caregiver. The patient's family left around 9 pm leaving the patient alone. Savannah kept a close eye on Ms. M because she wanted to be at her side when the time came. Around 11 PM Savannah alerted myself and the PCT, and we stood with Ms. M as she was taking her final breaths. Savannah held her hand, talked to her, comforted her, and cried. She treated her as she would a family member. I was so impressed with how she cared for this patient. Although she had 5 other patients, she wanted to make sure in Ms. M's last few moments, she was not alone. Savannah called the family and reassured them that the patient went peacefully and was not alone. She knew our care goes beyond the patient and the family needed to hear that. I was so moved by Savannah that night. Seeing someone pass away is not easy, but she handled it with such grace and compassion. Savannah's actions are a true example of our service commitment to “extend human kindness," in particular "respecting human dignity" and "engaging with compassion," making her so deserving of the DAISY Award.
