Then, when the infant arrived, she grabbed that baby's hand and said, "Hello, my name is Sasha, and you don't know how special you are, but you are about to save so many lives, sweetheart.”
A 2-year-old was shot by a 4-year-old. We knew the child would not make it, but that we would be working toward organ procurement. When assembling our team, Sasha immediately said, "Wait! Who is up for this? We need to take care of our own." Sasha went to the resuscitation bay to discuss this with the nurse assigned. Sasha stated, "I am not saying you can't do this, but you have young children at home. You do not need to see a dead baby come in. I am prepared to do this. Let me take your place." I have been a nurse for 16 years, and I have never been more proud of a nurse. Then, when the infant arrived, she grabbed that baby's hand and said, "Hello, my name is Sasha, and you don't know how special you are, but you are about to save so many lives, sweetheart.” This is the caliber of nursing we have here at Mayo Clinic. I honestly can't think of a better example in all my years as a nurse than that moment. This nurse not only put her needs to the side, but also thought of this child, our co-workers, and every life that was about to be affected by this one patient. This was an example of why nurses are not replaceable - you can't teach this kind of nursing. She is just phenomenal...and that's what we are here at Mayo...phenomenal.
