One morning, my husband was brought into the ER by ambulance in A-fib. He had open heart surgery two weeks prior up at St. Luke’s in Milwaukee. So, needless to say, it was a very scary situation, not knowing what or why this was happening. We spent several hours in the ER and were told he was being moved to the overflow room in the Same Day Surgery area until he could be moved to a regular room.
Still very much in A-fib and unsure of what this meant. This is where we were greeted by this lovely nurse named Sarai Acosta. She immediately introduced herself and told my husband and me exactly what she was doing and made him comfortable. Any questions we had, she answered to the best of her ability. If she didn’t know, she would ask whoever and get an answer for us. She was so attentive to my husband, it calmed me to relax for the first time in weeks. She went above and beyond all day long until it was time for us to leave for the evening.
My daughter and I explained our nervousness about the beeping of the monitor in his small cubicle of a room, as he had flatlined on the day of his surgery and had to be revived. So, Sarai read his chart from the day of this surgery until that night. She was so compassionate when she would check on him. A touch on the arm when she explained what was happening, a smile of encouragement that this would get better. For me, my husband, and my daughter, it meant the world. She assured us he was in very good hands overnight. He was, as she expressed.
Early morning on Thursday, I was relieved to see her smiling face as we walked into my husband’s room. My husband finally got moved to a regular room late in the afternoon. Sarai kindly packed us up and wheeled my husband over to a room on the cardiac wing. She helped him to get situated, and I wanted to cry when she left. She hugged us and wished us well. I told her how grateful I was to have met her. She is exactly in the field she should be in. She was the most amazing nurse I’ve ever met in my 54 years.
From the day of my husband’s surgery up at St. Luke’s until being dropped off in that cardiac room at Aurora, Sarai’s care was beyond amazing. Please know you have an amazing employee. Treat her well because she is exactly the kind of nurse that people need in some of the worst times of their lives. Celebrate Sarai Acosta, she very much deserves it!
