Throughout the clinical course, Sarah Warner took it upon herself to make sure that all patients knew that they were heard and their needs acknowledged. This level of professionalism didn’t stop with the patients but extended to their family members as well. On many occasions, she expressed the need to do more. It was a joy to see her emerge from her timid shell at the beginning of the clinical experience to a strong, fearless student nurse aiming to give quality care. Many of the nurses spoke of her willingness to learn. Sarah provided compassionate, quality, culturally based care which was highly spoken of by her preceptors.

On a busy clinical day, a patient who was hearing impaired was admitted to the unit. The patient was having difficulty communicating his needs. The nurse who was assigned to this patient stated, “We were at a loss in caring for this patient. We had requested a sign language interpreter, but one was not readily available.” Sarah stepped up to the task. She walked over to the nurse to assist with settling the patient. Upon recognizing that the patient was hearing impaired, Sarah immediately greeted the patient and told him her name and what they were doing. The patient was amazed, and the nurse was as well. The nurse stated that even though the interpreter arrived soon after this interaction, the connection had already been made with the nursing student, and the patient was put at ease. She not only used her skill set to communicate with the patient, but with other staff members as well. The smiles this put on their faces were truly heartwarming.

It is with profound joy that I commend Sarah Warner. She has shown an exemplary level of professionalism and care.

Thank you, Sarah, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
