Sarah was able to explain the next steps to the son. He was beyond appreciative for Sarah advocating for his dad.
On 1/13/23, Sarah was caring for a patient that was readmitted to 2N within 24 hours of being discharged. The patient’s son expressed his concerns that the patient should not have been discharged the day before. The pulmonologist & hospitalist spoke with the son and did not feel the patient would do well and were contributing his current state to Parkinson’s Disease. This was the 3rd admit since December. Sarah called the Chaplain for the son for additional support. She then spent time with the son, who in his grief explained that a month ago the patient was up and talking and walking and able to care for himself. After meeting with the MD’s, the son signed DNR paperwork. Sarah knew this was not what he wanted, so she contacted the Care Manager and an order for Ethics was placed. The Ethics MD agreed to look further into this case. Sarah was able to explain the next steps to the son. He was beyond appreciative for Sarah advocating for his dad. The DNR was revoked, which removed the heaviness the son was feeling.
