Sarah researched and purchased a little pack-n-play for D to use in her room.
We have had a patient, D, in our unit for over a year. We have watched her grow from an infant into a full-blown toddler in this time. Initially, she was very sick and did not get to work on meeting all of the typical developmental milestones in her first year of life. As she has progressed in her recovery and healing, the team on this unit has begun to focus on some of the developmental work that she missed out on.

Many CVICU nurses, RTs, physicians, therapists, and more have brought things to this sweet patient during her stay. But one nurse in particular stands out as putting in the extra work to make sure D has some typical toddler experiences. I am writing this today because Sarah Lockhart has done two big things for this patient in the past week. Number 1, she advocated for D to get outside and experience some fresh air. She worked with the team one day last week to set this patient up with some outside time (for the first time in a year!). This is something that took the approval and collaboration of many team members to make happen.

Number 2, Sarah researched and purchased a little pack-n-play for D to use in her room. This gets D out of her crib and her limiting chair onto the "floor" where she can safely be free to roll around, develop her muscles for crawling, standing, and sitting, play with her toys, and more. I've never seen D so happy. This is one example of the excellent, patient-centered care that Sarah gives on a daily basis. This going above and beyond for her patients is not a rare occurrence. She loves to spoil them when she can with spa days, special hair care, field trips, and snuggles. Her compassion in these moments is what I feel exemplifies a DAISY Nurse!

I’m nominating Sarah, who cared for my daughter E during her recent hospital stay due to SVT and an irregular heartbeat. From the moment we arrived, Sarah made every single day better, for E and for us as parents. She brought calm, comfort, and joy to an otherwise stressful experience. Sarah was soothing and peaceful when E needed reassurance, and fun and engaging when E needed distraction. She got E to take her medications without fuss and handled procedures like blood draws with ease and kindness. Sarah clearly loves what she does, and it shows in every interaction. It’s a rare and beautiful thing to come across a nurse who brings this level of excellence, compassion, and professionalism. She not only made E’s stay better, she made ours, as parents, easier and less frightening. We are incredibly grateful and believe she should be recognized for the way she represents her profession and the hospital. She made the entire care team shine.

Thank you, Sarah.
