Sarah didn’t just change my life; she gave me the courage to build one.
I know this nomination is 12 years late, but not a day has passed without me remembering the extraordinary care Sarah gave—not just to my son, but to me. It’s long overdue, but I hope it finds her and honors what she gave to a scared, young mother who needed someone to believe in her.

In 2013, I gave birth to my son J. I was only 15 years old. J was born with Gastroschisis, something we had learned about prenatally, and after his birth, he was transferred to CHLA. That’s where we met Sarah, who eventually became his primary nurse.

From the beginning, Sarah was nothing short of incredible. She treated me with respect and kindness that I never expected, especially given how young I was. She never judged me. Not once. At a time when I felt small, scared, and unworthy, Sarah saw me. She saw a mother who loved her child, and she treated me like I belonged in that NICCU just as much as anyone else.

Sarah didn’t just care for J—though she did that beautifully, with skill, patience, and a gentle touch. She cared for me. She explained things over and over without ever losing patience. She included me in J’s care, empowering me when I felt helpless.

Her compassion and professionalism went far beyond what any nurse is asked to give. Sarah didn’t just help save my son—she helped shape my future. Because of her, I am now a NICU nurse. She lit a spark in me that has never gone out, and I carry her example with me in every shift I work. When I comfort a frightened parent or guide them through unfamiliar territory, I think of her. When I care for a fragile baby, I remember how she held J and how she made him feel safe.

Twelve years later, her kindness still echoes in my life—and now in the lives of the babies and families I serve. Sarah didn’t just change my life; she gave me the courage to build one.
