She is genuine in her care and goes above and beyond to make sure all patients feel heard and supported.
Sarah Giles is an excellent example of what it means to be a DAISY nurse. Sarah demonstrates striving for excellence, compassion, and a commitment to improving the patient and family experience, especially during the most vulnerable moments of life.
Sarah is an oncology nurse on Inpatient Cancer Care because of her ability to see the good in every patient and every situation. Sarah has a unique sense of humor that allows her to connect with her patients and coworkers. Sarah shows kindness and empathy towards some of the most difficult patients, particularly those struggling with mental illness and stressors. She offers empathy and compassion to all patients, regardless of their background. She is genuine in her care and goes above and beyond to make sure all patients feel heard and supported.
Recently, Sarah led the thoughtful redesign and reintroduction of individualized Comfort Care Boxes on ICC. What started as an idea quickly became a meaningful and sustainable reality because of her dedication and follow-through. These personalized care boxes are now available to offer peace, comfort, and emotional support to patients and families receiving end-of-life care.
The initiative reflects Sarah’s attention to detail, her empathy, and her ability to see beyond medical needs to each individual patient and family. Each box includes a sympathy card from our ICC staff, chocolates, local hospice and bereavement resources, and comforting items tailored to what the family may value, such as socks, essential oils, snacks, or a soft blanket. Sarah also created a clear, compassionate process for how and when to give these boxes, ensuring that all staff can contribute meaningfully and that families are cared for consistently. Sarah didn’t just implement a new process; she created a new way for ICC staff to extend kindness, connection, and dignity.
Sarah Giles is a compassionate, innovative, and dedicated nurse who truly goes above and beyond for her patients and team. The Comfort Care Boxes are just one example of the heart Sarah brings to her work every day. She is a role model for compassionate care and a true asset to ICC. Her efforts make a lasting difference in the lives of patients, families, and coworkers. She is a role model, and her compassion is a reminder of how the actions of nurses are impactful and meaningful to the patients we care for.
