April 2026 Honoree
Sarah Brooks, BSN, RN
When our son entered the world, it wasn’t the way we had imagined. An emergency C-section, a rush of voices, bright lights, and then the words no parent is prepared to hear — NICU. In a moment that should have felt purely joyful, we were overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. And in the middle of that storm, we were given an incredible gift: a nurse who would change our entire experience.
For four days, she was more than a nurse. She was our steady presence when everything felt fragile. She cared for our son with a tenderness that went beyond monitors, charts, and protocols. Every adjustment she made, every time she checked his vitals, every gentle repositioning of his tiny body — it was done with such intention and compassion that it gave us confidence when we had none. She didn’t just treat a patient; she cared for our baby.
But what meant just as much was how she cared for us. She explained every beep, every number, every change in a way that calmed our racing thoughts. She never rushed our questions. She reassured my wife when guilt and exhaustion crept in. She reminded us that we were still his parents in a room filled with machines.
In moments when we felt helpless, she gave us small ways to participate — a hand to hold, a diaper to change, a moment of skin-to-skin when possible. Those weren’t small things to us. They were everything.
Her compassion turned one of the most frightening weeks of our lives into something bearable — even meaningful. Because of her, the NICU wasn’t just a place of fear; it became a place where we saw strength, dedication, and humanity at its very best.
We will never forget the difference she made in our son’s care — not just in helping him grow stronger, but in helping us feel stronger too. In a time when we needed hope the most, she carried it for us until we could carry it ourselves.
Thank you, Sarah, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
