When a patient with cognitive challenges had a heart catheter procedure, Sara was meticulous about comforting the patient during the experience and explaining follow-up care. Impressed by her attentiveness, the patient's caregiver later sent her a letter of thanks.
Sara's great sense of humor and excellent listening skills made the patient's recovery a fun experience. She was diligent with explaining follow-up care to the patient without overwhelming him, and, in fact, had him smiling the whole time.
"I always want to be approachable to patients," says Sara. "I love taking care of patients and helping their family through tough times. Sometimes, humor can remind them there's still something to smile about."
Having been a nurse for 21 years, Sara says she's always had a soft spot for taking care of patients with physical and mental challenges. Upon receiving the DAISY Award, she says she was grateful for the recognition, and was stunned at being presented with this high honor.
"It's neat to be recognized for what you do, and it's one of the biggest honors I've been given," Sara says. "But, at the end of the day, nurses, technologists and nursing assistants are a team, and, together, we're all able to give patients the best care."
