It is our honor to commend Sara Gillespie for the extraordinary leadership, compassion, and support she demonstrated during one of the most heartbreaking days our unit has faced.

Sara exemplifies the very essence of our NGHS core values and competencies, especially Deep Interdependence, Respectful Compassion, Vulnerability, and Empathy.

Following the devastating loss of one of our beloved RNs, Sara immediately stepped into one of the most difficult roles a leader and team member can be asked to carry—walking alongside her team through grief while ensuring they still felt supported, safe, and cared for.

From the very beginning of the morning, Sara was present. She did not shy away from the pain, the difficult conversations, or the emotional weight of the day. Instead, she stood firmly beside her team as a steady, calming presence—a true rock for those around her. She helped deliver heartbreaking news with grace, compassion, and authenticity, creating space for her team to process emotions in a way that honored both their grief and their humanity.

Sara demonstrated remarkable, courageous leadership by leading through vulnerability. She understood that leadership in moments like these is not about having all the answers—it is about showing up fully, being present, and carrying the burden alongside your people.

What stood out most was Sara’s commitment to her team. She remained with the unit throughout the day and returned that night as her team returned to ensure the unit was stable and running smoothly. Even in the midst of her own grief, she continued to prioritize the well-being of her staff and patients, never losing sight of the people who needed her most.

Throughout the day, we witnessed something profoundly meaningful. The team rallied around one another in beautiful and authentic ways. There were moments of deep sadness and tears, followed by moments of laughter as stories were shared about the incredible nurse and person we had lost. Sara helped foster that environment—one where grief and gratitude could coexist, where mourning could sit alongside celebration of a life that impacted so many.

She helped remind us that the legacy of our beloved nurse will not end with her passing. Her kindness, dedication, and spirit will continue to live on in the culture she helped shape and in the people she influenced.

Sara’s leadership that day was not simply about managing a unit—it was about shepherding people through loss with compassion, strength, and grace. Her presence made an immeasurable difference, and the impact of her leadership will be felt long after this moment has passed.

We are deeply grateful for Sara and the way she consistently lives out our mission and values. She is a remarkable leader, an extraordinary caregiver, and truly deserving of this recognition.

Thank you, Sara, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
