Sara went above and beyond for this patient and family and demonstrated caring and compassion far beyond what a nursing student typically does
In one of our first weeks of clinical, Sara was assigned a patient who had transitioned to comfort measures. This patient was alone, as his family was traveling. Sara spent the entire morning with this patient, providing physical care, and she was an emotional presence as well. Sara sat with this patient for hours, holding his hand and telling him his family loved him and that they would soon be there to see him. Although this patient was supposed to go to hospice house, he ended up being at a place where the staff felt he would pass prior to transfer. When the patient's family arrived, Sara stayed with them. The patient then passed away, and although the nursing staff left to give them privacy, Sara stayed with the sons and their wives and provided additional support to them. She told me she felt bad the medical staff left, and she wanted to make sure they were at peace. Sara went above and beyond for this patient and family and demonstrated caring and compassion far beyond what a nursing student typically does. I want to nominate her for TheDAISY Award for her compassion in this family's sad moment.
