A patient shared a very emotional story about how her nurse, Saquib, made a profound difference in her care. She was struggling deeply because it was her first time being away from her young child, and the sadness had become overwhelming.

When Saquib entered the room, he immediately recognized her distress. Instead of stepping out, he chose to sit down beside her and gently ask what was wrong. She opened up about how much she missed her son and showed him pictures, and Saquib listened with genuine passion. He offered reassurance, kindness, and even a few lighthearted jokes that brought a smile back.

She told me with tears in her eyes, “He didn’t walk out; he sat with me. He made me smile and laugh when I was so sad.””

It is with this kind of compassionate and dedicated care that Kaiser Permanente and the DAISY Foundation present Saquib with this award.
